PRESIDENT TINUBU APPOINTS AISHA GARBA AS EXECUTIVE SECRETARY OF UNIVERSAL BASIC EDUCATION COMMISSION (UBEC)

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Aisha Garba, a distinguished international development specialist, as the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

With over 24 years of experience in education and human capital development, Aisha Garba has made a mark through transformative programmes aimed at addressing global and local challenges in the education sector. She has worked across Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Kenya, the United States, and the United Kingdom, leveraging her expertise to impact lives positively.

For more than 15 years, Garba served as a Senior Education Specialist at the World Bank, where she led the design, management, and execution of impactful education programmes. Her work has been instrumental in conceptualising and implementing reforms tailored to foster sustainable educational outcomes, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected regions.

Notably, Garba was part of the team that successfully worked toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Nigeria. She has also served as a consultant for globally renowned organisations, including the Department for International Development (DFID), BOND-UK, Regent Foundation, and Muslim Aid Organization.

An alumna of Petra American University in Jordan, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Computer Studies in 2000, Garba also holds a Master’s in International Development from the University of Birmingham, UK, completed in 2007.

President Tinubu expressed confidence in Garba’s ability to deliver on the mandate of UBEC, aligning with his administration’s vision of renewed hope and commitment to providing quality education for all Nigerian children. Her wealth of experience, extensive global networks, and expertise in human development and program delivery are expected to catalyze reforms aimed at making Nigerian children globally competitive through access to quality education.

This appointment underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to fostering a resilient education system that addresses the developmental aspirations of Nigeria.
