Indian Firm Establishes CNG Vehicle Assembly Plant in Kwara, Boosting Nigeria’s Clean Energy Drive

Indian automotive company B-One Mobility Limited has inaugurated a compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle assembly plant in the state. The initiative, announced by the company’s CEO, Mr. Atul Saraf, aims to produce gas-powered tricycles tailored to Nigeria’s growing demand for affordable and clean transportation.

The assembly plant, which is the first of its kind in the region, is expected to significantly contribute to job creation, poverty reduction, and environmental sustainability. According to Mr. Saraf, the decision to invest in Nigeria aligns with the federal government’s commitment to clean energy and economic diversification.

“We are excited to bring sustainable transportation solutions to Nigeria, starting with Kwara State. Our CNG-powered tricycles are not only eco-friendly but also cost-efficient, addressing the transportation needs of millions of Nigerians while reducing carbon emissions,” Saraf stated during the official announcement.

The establishment of the plant is a strategic alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s CNG initiative, which was introduced to mitigate the rising cost of transportation in the aftermath of the removal of fuel subsidies. The initiative emphasizes a transition to alternative energy sources, with CNG emerging as a viable option due to its affordability and environmental benefits.

Economic Impact
The CNG vehicle assembly plant is poised to create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs for residents of Kwara State, ranging from manufacturing roles to distribution and maintenance services. Additionally, the project is expected to spur local economic growth by fostering ancillary businesses such as spare parts production and retail.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq lauded the investment, noting its potential to drive economic transformation in the state. “This initiative complements our administration’s focus on industrialization and job creation. It is a testament to Kwara’s growing appeal as an investment destination,” the governor said.

A Step Towards Clean Energy
The launch of CNG-powered tricycles signals a significant step towards reducing Nigeria’s dependence on fossil fuels. Unlike traditional petrol-powered vehicles, CNG-powered alternatives emit fewer pollutants, contributing to cleaner air quality.

The initiative also aligns with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). By offering cost-effective transportation options, it addresses both environmental and economic challenges.

Affordability for Nigerians
In addition to environmental benefits, CNG-powered tricycles promise to ease transportation costs for millions of Nigerians. The vehicles offer a more affordable alternative for drivers and passengers, potentially reducing the overall cost of transporting goods and persons across the country.

The federal government has expressed its commitment to supporting such initiatives. During a recent briefing, a representative of the Ministry of Transportation emphasized the importance of partnerships with private investors like B-One Mobility Limited in achieving the government’s transportation and energy goals.

As production commences at the Kwara assembly plant, expectations are high that this innovative venture will set a benchmark for clean and affordable transportation in Nigeria and foster a model that could be replicated across other states.

The plant’s unveiling marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy, highlighting the pivotal role of private sector investment in actualizing the nation’s vision for sustainable development.
