The 5th edition of the Unity Festival took center stage yesterday, December 14, 2024, at the Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Art and Culture, Abuja, showcasing a vibrant tapestry of Nigeria’s cultural diversity and youthful talent.
Themed “Reinforcing Our Unity,” the festival brought together cultural troupes, talented young performers, and dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond. Local and international tourists, as well as representatives of corporate organizations, were among the audience, lending an air of global recognition to the annual event.
One of the festival’s highlights was the breathtaking performance by a young contortionist, whose flexibility and artistry left the crowd in awe. Adding depth and emotion to the celebration, captivating spoken word poets used their voices to deliver powerful messages of hope, unity, and resilience.
Live bands provided a rhythmic heartbeat throughout the event, blending contemporary and traditional sounds that energized the audience. Performances by various talented young Nigerians added a fresh perspective to the cultural festivities, showcasing the boundless creativity of the nation’s youth.
Notable cultural displays included the regal delegation from the Palace of the Obong of Calabar and the star act of the evening, the Eyo masquerade from Lagos. The Eyo troupe’s dramatic and energetic presentation was a highlight, earning the audience applause.
In her welcome address, Jennifer Serrano, President of The Unity Project Nigeria, emphasized the importance of embracing unity as a tool for national growth. “Nigeria has so much to be grateful for. We must embrace peace and amplify the issues that unite us as a nation,” she said. Serrano also commended the youth for their pivotal role in shaping the festival’s success, calling them the future custodians of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
The festival served as a meeting point for cultural exchange, with attendees expressing admiration for Nigeria’s rich diversity. A visiting tourist from Lebanon noted, “This festival is a beautiful representation of what makes Nigeria special. The energy and unity are truly inspiring.”
Corporate organizations in attendance also praised the initiative, pledging support for future editions to ensure the festival continues to grow as a platform for cultural promotion and youth development.
As the event drew to a close, a grand finale featuring a performer’s rendition of Timi Dakolo’s song “Great Nation” brought the audience to their feet, solidifying the festival’s message of unity through diversity.
